PRP: Dr. Dabade’s Non-Surgical Solution to Hair Loss-duplicate-1

Do you need a hair loss solution? Are you starting to notice more hair in the shower drain or worse, patches of thinning hair on your scalp? Board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Tushar Dabade, may have the solution; Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy.

Tens of millions of men and women deal with thinning hair or baldness in the United States. In some patients, hair loss starts early in life but more commonly affects those over the age of 50.  Over 50% of men deal with some level of hair loss after the age of 50.

PRP is an emerging treatment which can help revive hair growth by using the body’s natural growth factors and healing mechanisms. PRP is a great option for hair restoration because of its effectiveness in increasing the growth phase of the hair cycle, hair thickness, and hair count. It is an advanced therapy which has been gaining popularity as a non-surgical hair loss solution in the last few years.

The Procedure

The treatment starts by drawing a small amount of the patient’s blood. Next, Dr. Dabade places the blood in a special centrifuge to separate the platelets from the red blood cells. The result is a plasma that is rich in platelets and that is chock full of the body’s healing nutrients and growth factors. This PRP is injected with tiny needles in into the treatment site at hair follicle depth. The process is complete in approximately a half hour.

Convenient with Little Discomfort

Although drawing blood may seem a bit frightening to some, the process is practically risk-free and can be done during a lunch break. Most of our patients have the therapy with no anesthetic, but cool packs and a numbing cream are available if necessary.

There may be some discomfort after the procedure, but this is managed by cold compresses and over-the-counter pain medications like Tylenol. Any discomfort will quickly diminish. We recommend hot showers to stimulate blood circulation throughout the scalp and no hair maintenance like blow drying or coloring for a couple of days.

Who is this Treatment For?

Patients dealing with any level of hair loss are good candidates for PRP therapy. However, we have found those experiencing early hair loss respond best. Dr. Dabade uses PRP most commonly for patients with male and female “pattern” alopecia, which is a genetic hair thinning condition which typically occurs over the top of the scalp.

Results

Consistency is the key to optimal results. Dr. Dabade will assess the level of hair loss and recommend a series of treatments (typically once a month for the first three months). Afterward, he will make another assessment and recommend additional treatments as necessary. A maintenance treatment every six months is ideal for continued restoration.

Depending on the patient’s response, they should notice improvement within three months after the first treatment.
