Treatments for Hair Loss
The beauty of having our team on your side is that we draw from both the traditional options of the past, as well as new cutting-edge procedures. In some cases of hair loss, older treatments can do the trick, and patients benefit from solutions like minoxidil (Rogaine), medications by mouth like finasteride (Propecia), spironolactone, and vitamins, or even light-based treatments. But we recognize taking daily medications is not practical for everyone, and they have potential side effects which you may want to avoid. If you’re in that camp, options like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and Neograft hair restoration are effective alternatives. Simply put, there’s no one size fits all, and sometimes a combination approach yields the best result.
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP): A Natural, Non-Surgical Approach
What is PRP?
PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is a natural solution that we prepare from your own blood. We concentrate a component of your blood called platelets, which are packed with helpful growth factors. When injected into the scalp, PRP stimulates the hair follicles, increases blood flow to help hair grow, and ultimately thickens the hair shaft, “awakening” hair that that was previously on its way out. All great news for anyone battling hair loss.
Who is a candidate for PRP?
Men and women with almost all types of hair loss can benefit from PRP, including the most common form of thinning which comes with age. PRP is best when used early in the hair loss process, kicking hair back into gear. It can be performed in addition to other hair treatments as well.
What can I expect from a PRP treatment?
PRP is a straightforward in-office procedure. A small vial of blood is drawn and using the SelphylR Platelet-rich Firbin Matrix (PRFM) system, we prepare the PRP while you relax in the clinic. We then strategically place small injections of the PRP into the scalp, using an ice pack if needed to minimize any discomfort. Afterward, there are no bandages, you may style your hair and head on your way.
How many treatments do you need?
Ideally, three treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart is the best starting point, and we monitor progress by taking photographs at each session. After the initial series of three, intermittent injections every three to six months can help maintain the hair you have grown, with some individuals requiring less depending upon response.
Hair Transplantation (follicular unit extraction with NeoGraft)
Certain patterns of hair loss and hairlines with recession or balding can be improved best with the Neograft hair restoration procedure. This technique uses a follicular unit extraction method, removing individual hairs one at a time from the back of the scalp, then manually placing them in a manner that provides a natural appearing, fuller head of hair. The procedure is very different than the older strip method, which can lead to a long scar over the back of the head and longer recovery times. The results can be dramatic, see for yourself here.
