Are You a Candidate for Facelift Surgery?
Candidates for a facelift typically have creases around the lower eyelids, nose and mouth, as well as sagging in the mid-face and lax skin around the jawline. The best candidates are healthy, do not smoke and have reasonable, concrete goals for surgery. For our Naperville and Burr Ridge area patients who are experiencing signs of aging but are not in need a facelift, Dr. Will performs other aesthetic procedures including eyelid lift and browlift in Naperville.
What to Expect During Surgery
Facelift is typically performed on an outpatient basis. Anesthesia and sedation medications are used so you can sleep comfortably throughout surgery and won’t feel anything. The length of surgery will depend on your specific treatment plan, but surgery usually takes two to four hours.
To begin, Dr. Will will make the facelift incisions along the hairline and around the ear. She will separate the skin from the underlying tissue. Then, she will reposition and tighten the tissues to improve the facial contours and create a “lifted” look. Dr. Will will remove excess skin and re-drape the remaining skin more tightly over the facial structures. Finally, she will close the incisions with sutures and place fluffy bandages around the face.
After waking up from surgery, you will rest in the recovery suite for an hour or two while our team monitors you. Then, you will be released into the care of your companion, who should drive you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours after surgery.
What to Expect During Recovery
Your face will be bandaged and the incisions will be dressed. During recovery, you should rest quietly at home, keeping the head elevated and taking the prescribed medications to prevent infection or pain. Dr. Will can advise you when it is best to remove the bandages/stitches and when to resume everyday activities. Facelift risks, although rare, include infection, unfavorable scarring, excessive bleeding, anesthesia-related complications and injury to the facial nerves.
Benefits of Facelift
An expertly performed facelift will address the signs of aging and help you enjoy a younger, fresher appearance. Your facelift treatment plan will be customized to your specific concerns and can accomplish the following:
- Repair loose skin: loose, sagging skin will be removed, and the remaining skin will be re-draped over the facial structures. Although the skin will look smoother and tighter, Dr. Will avoids putting too much tension on the skin, which can cause a pulled or “windblown-”looking result.
- Tighten facial muscles/tissues: weakened muscles and the underlying facial structures (known as the superficial musculo-aponeurotic system or SMAS) will be tightened and lifted into a better configuration.
- Improve facial contours: the cheeks and lower eyelids will look smoother, and the lower face (i.e., jawline, neck) will have better definition and contours. Prominent jowls or fatty skin on the neck can be treated, as well.
